Hello right back at ya! I am very happy that God has blessed Pastor Jerry and Daystar as He has. It’s good to see you both continually moving forward.

Jerry,
What would you say is the greatest challenge facing the “average church” in America who wants to see similar growth?

Your mother told me about your blog account and I thought “I have never responded to anyone with a blog account” so I though “why not”. Anyway, I pretty much keep in touch with your church activities through Lois and Gary. They are so proud of you and Cheryl. From the message regarding your Thanksgiving dinner, looks like your attendance may outgrow the new church before long. Keep up the great work and may God continue to bless you and your’s.

Mark,

I would say that the greatest challenge facing most churches is what one author called the “curse of knowledge.” I’ll try to paraphrase what I read in an article a few months ago. WE are cursed with the knowledge of what’s going on around the church. We know when to sit in church, when to stand, when to clap. We know that you sing verse 1, chorus, verse 2, chorus, skip verse 3 and go to verse 4 before singing chorus twice. We know what “the glory” is and that “when God closes a door He always opens a window” and a million other religious cliches. In short, the church world doesn’t know what it means to not know.

Solution? Think really hard and try to consider what it would be like to come to your church if you’ve never been to a church before in your life. This philosophy will change everything: sermons, classes, architecture, programs, songs, activities… If, by chance, the pastor can get this kind of a vision, THEN the true journey begins…trying to convince the current membership to change its vision. BUT – it can happen. And it is happening today in churches all over America.

Hello Jerry!
Just wanted you to know that you have at least one friend. Take care and have a blessed holiday season. I will be up that way during the month of Dec. If the weather permits maybe I can give you a golf lesson. I remain in awe at how God is usuing you and your family. We love you guys!

Bring it on, Richie. I really think 2009 is going to be my year to break the curse of tyranny that you and Kip have held over me these many years! You’re the only former youth member that beats me in golf. You gotta’ go down, man!!!

Jerry, I will have to agree with your “greatest challenge” reply. Just this week, a couple that I know called up the deacon’s at John’s church to ask about what to do to become saved and how to explain it to their kids and answer questions the kids have. Neither of them were brought up in church so they were (for lack of a better term) clueless to it all. Yet…they realized the importance of their childrens’ need to be a part of it and have found “their new church home”.

God really is good as it gets huh?

Happy Thanksgiving!
